To commemorate the past 40 years of ONS and look forward to the next 40, the ONS Foundation, with the generous support of the ONS–Lilly Oncology Advancing Patient Care Project, will be inflatable floating water park offering 40 Congress scholarships for emerging chapter leaders under the age of 40. Recipients will receive an educational scholarship for up to $1,200 to fund their trip to the ONS 40th Annual Congress in Orlando, FL.

Think you fit the bill? Apply now to be considered for a scholarship. You’ll need to have one of your chapter officers fill out a Chapter Recommendation Form to accompany your application.

Not under 40, but know an emerging leader? Encourage your eligible colleagues to apply. If you’re a chapter officer, you can get them started by filling out the Chapter Recommendation Form in advance.

Please note: The application deadline has now passed.

This is ageist and unacceptable. I understand the need to encourage a younger generation to participate in ONS leadership but this is discriminatory. I will be looking at particpating in other professional organizations.

Hi R.M., I’m sorry to hear you are upset about the 40 Under 40 scholarships. This is just one of the scholarship opportunities for Congress. There were other Congress scholarships available through the ONS Foundation, but their deadline has passed. We wanted to share one last chance for young leaders to have the opportunity to go to Congress this year. We greatly appreciate all of our members and hope that you will continue to participate with ONS in the future.

Like R.M, I find this disturbing especially since many people have chosen nursing as a second career and are just getting started, at the age of 40!! Encouraging new blood is a great idea but at what costs?!?! This is a slap in the face to many!
ONS, you claim to advocate for nursing but in this you are stating, that if you are over 40, ‘You are no longer viable to oncology nursing and we don’t want/need you; you are too old to learn and not useful. However, please be a member and pay your yearly dues; so we can exclude you for benefits in this organization.”

Hi BT, We appreciate your feedback. The 40 under 40 scholarships are not meant to offend nurses over 40. As I mentioned, there were other opportunities available for nurses of all ages. This was just one special scholarship to coincide with the ONS 40th Anniversary. I encourage you to look into the other scholarships from the ONS Foundation when they become available for next year’s Congress. Thank you for commitment to oncology nursing.

unfortunately I don’t see any of those other opportunities on the Foundation site for the 2015 conference
The link above is for 2016 and can’t be used until 3 months before the deadline of Dec 2015 for the 2016 conference Application Deadline: December 1, 2015 (check back after September 1, 2015) for the 2016 Congress application.
Deadlines are set for our annual distribution of scholarships. The online applications are available approximately three months prior to the application deadline.

Hi Pat, You are correct. The other 2015 Congress scholarships had a deadline of December 1, 2014. The 40 Under 40 scholarships were announced later than the others, which is why they have a later deadline. I apologize for any confusion. I highly recommend checking back in September and applying for the 2016 Congress scholarships when they become available. Thank you for your interest!
