APRN Consensus Model: Impact on the Oncology NP/CNS and Educator
This session will provide an overview of the new regulatory model for advanced practice nurses, which is scheduled to be effective as of 2015. The APRN Consensus Model which was established in 2008 and endorsed by the Oncology Nursing Society and the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, will affect all APRNs, including Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists and Oncology Nurse Practitioners. The new model is intended to standardize practice and regulatory criteria for all APRNs across all state jurisdictions, hence enhancing mobility for APRNs. Background information on the model and its impact on oncology education, certification and practice will be discussed. The criteria for licensure of oncology CNSs and NPs and the progress of implementation of the model by state board of nursing will be presented. Ongoing sources of information and resources will be shared.

The Transplant and Oncology Unit at Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center implements the largest volume of central venous catheters and uses the Comprehensive Unit Based Safety Program (CUSP). These patients have multiple risk factors, including prolonged neutropenia and disease-related complications that put them at a high risk for developing a central line-associated infection and/or sepsis and at a higher risk of dying. Discussion will describe CUSP, which was designed to educate and empower healthcare organizations to promote a culture of safety.

The Epigenetic Pet Shop: KATs and BRDs, but Who Let the DOGs Out?
This session will focus on the effect of epigenetics on the biology of cancer and its treatment using acute myeloid leukemia as a case study example. Infection
Infection continues to be a significant risk for morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. The oncology nurse is in the forefront of care, recognizing patients at risk for infection, and variables influencing the likelihood of a significant infection. Infections and their significant consequences can be ameliorated by prompt recognition of risks or symptoms, with timely diagnostic testing, and rapid initiation of interventions. This presentation will provide an overview of current evidence in assessment and management of infections, using case scenarios to emphasize key concepts of assessment and management of infectious complications in patients with cancer.
