This course will equip you with the tools you need to safely administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy to your patients with cancer, while providing the type of quality care demanded by your institution. Plus, you’ll earn NCPD, an ONS Provider Card (a small downloadable, printable card that indicates course requirements have been met), and an ONCC certificate of added qualification that indicates attainment of knowledge (which cannot be provided without first establishing that level of knowledge.) The e-book version of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice is included with the course registration.

The primary purpose of this certificate course is to best prepare and reinforce critical information for safe administration and use evidence to manage acute side effects and adverse events related to chemotherapy and immunotherapy administration. 

This course is offered on demand. Instructions on how to immediately access the course will be sent to you in an automatically generated email receipt after you register.

You will enjoy access for 90 days from date of purchase, after which you will no longer be able to access the course.

To receive nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hours, the following requirements must be met prior to the closing date and time of the course: 

  • Achieve 80% or higher on the post‐test. (Note: You will have two [2] attempts to achieve a score of 80% or higher on the post-test.)
  • Completion of the course evaluation. A course evaluation MUST be completed to be granted the NCPD contact hours. The evaluation link is locked until passing the post-test.

Who is eligible for the renewal course?

If you have earned your ONS Provider Card and ONCC Certificate of Added Qualification through the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Course, you will be eligible to renew through the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate Renewal Course every two years, assuming that you are not more than 30 days past your expiration date. Check your ONS Provider Card or ONS profile for the expiration date of your card.

ILNA Breakdown

Content in this learning activity is applicable to meeting individual requirements for certification renewal through the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation's Individual Learning Needs Assessment (ILNA) renewal method.

Up to 4.0 ILNA points may be applied to Cellular Collection, Preparative Regimens, and Infusion OR Foundations of Transplant. Up to 12.0 ILNA points may be applied to Psychosocial Dimensions of Care. Up to 14.0 ILNA points may be applied to Symptom Management, Palliative Care, Supportive Care. Up to 15.0 ILNA points may be applied to Nursing Practice OR Oncology Nursing Practice OR Professional Practice /Performance OR Treatment. 

No more than 16.3 total points may be claimed for the program.

The course is intended for nurses who have knowledge of cancer basics and are in a position to regularly administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy. What are the course expectations?

To obtain continuing nursing education credits, the provider card, and the certificate of added qualification, course participants must

  • Successfully complete the post-test with a score of 80% or higher
  • Submit the course evaluation

Do you suggest any test-taking strategies?

Test items relate to the content contained within the course, including readings and linked resources. You may refer to the course and required readings at any time while taking the post-test. Using resources outside of those provided in the course is not necessary nor is it recommended. The test is not timed and does not have to be completed in one sitting.

How long does it take to complete the course?

Data to date indicates that most learners are completing the course is approximately 15 hours. This is in line with the number of contact hours of continuing nursing education awarded.

I didn't pass the test. Can I retest?

Each learner will have two attempts to successfully pass the post-test. All attempts must be completed before the course closes.

If you are unsuccessful in meeting the requirements to earn NCPD within the stated time and test attempts or completion of the evaluation during your access to the course, ONS will not grant additional testing or evaluation opportunities, extensions, transfers, cancellations, or refunds. If you are unsuccessful in earning NCPD and wish to pursue additional attempts, you will need to purchase and register for access to a new course.

What if I want to cancel my registration?

Please be advised that the cancellation policy for this ONS online course is as follows.

Cancellations

  • If you wish to cancel your online course registration, you must notify ONS by sending your request via email to help@ons.org prior to accessing the online course. ONS will provide you a monetary refund equal to the cost of the online course registration minus a 30% cancellation fee.
  • No cancellations will be accepted after the scheduled end date of the course.

Are institutions reimbursing their nurses for the time spent on course participation?

ONS has discussed this issue with many institutions, and the decisions made by institutions vary. Those who are paying staff seem to be in line with paying for the 16 hours ONS has determined are needed to complete the course.

How are institutions helping nurses to successfully pass the exam? Do they provide additional resources?

Although the test is a challenge, the passing rate indicates that the test is practical for information presented in the course. The intended learner for the certificate course is a nurse who has knowledge of cancer basics and is in a position to regularly administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Although these characteristics are not prerequisites to participate in the course, the course does build on a foundation of cancer knowledge, with the learner earning a certificate of added qualification upon successful completion.

The course is not an introductory program and should not be used as a first step in orientation for nurses with little or no understanding of the use of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
