Cancer Prevention and Early Detection: A Changing Field With an Unchanging Goal

Modifiable risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, obesity, sun exposure, and infections account for 40%–50% of all new cancer diagnoses and all cancer deaths in the United States (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2023). Stop. Reread the first sentence. More than 1.9 million people will hear “you have cancer” for the first time this year, and close to 610,000 will die (Siegel et al., 2023).
